Results, impacts and lessons learned from technical assistance to non-fired brick production businesses

News 09:06 - 16/12/2019
From 22 to 29 November 2019, the Evaluation Team of the Project "Promotion of Non-Fired Brick Production and Utilization in Viet Nam" paid a working visit to non-fired brick (NFB) production businesses which are demonstration and replication models of the Project to evaluate the results, impacts and lessons learned from technical assistance to these models.

Visiting the NFB curing area using solar energy at Dai Dung green material JSC
Joining the Evaluation Team were Dr. Thai Duy Sam - Vice Chairman, General Secretary of Viet Nam Association for Building Materials (Team Leader), Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Lam - Lecturer of National University of Civil Engineering, PMU representatives. The Team had working sessions with representatives of business leaders and visited production lines at Dai Dung green material JSC (Ho Chi Minh City), Biconsi building material JSC (Binh Duong Province), Tran Chau NFB and precast concrete structure plant (Ha Tinh Province), Lam Viet non-fired building material Co. Ltd (Phu Tho Province), Toan Cau building material JSC (Hoa Binh Province) and Thanh An investment and infrastructure development JSC (Thai Binh province).

From 2015 to 2019, the Project has provided technical assistance to 26 NFB production investors in making investment reports, supporting the preparation of concessional loan documents to the Viet Nam Environment Protection Fund, supporting in calculating and selecting the optimal material mix using blast furnace ash from thermal power plants to produce NFBs, training human resources to operate production lines, preparing applications for conformity certificates, transfering curing technology using solar energy. With the total capacity of NFB production lines of 1.2 billion standard brick units receiving technical support, the key results obtained from these demonstration and replication models are as follows:

 Direct emission reduction is 1,512,955 tonnes of CO2 during the Project implementation period (2015-2019) and 10 years following (2020-2029).

 Saved 36,560 tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) during the Project implementation period (2015-2019).

 NFB market share in 2019 is 28.5% (Increased 15.5% compared to 2015).

Dr. Thai Duy Sam - Vice Chairman, General Secretary of Viet Nam Association for Building Materials, Team Leader said: These are successful models in using concessional loans from the Environment Protection Fund who are innovative in NFB production with the support of the Project thereby gradually eliminate the production of traditional fired bricks, save raw materials, fuels and materials, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contribute to the successful implementation of the Government's non-fired building material development program. These models should be replicated nationwide.
